Margarites village

Prinos Resort.

Margarites village is situated 27km east from Rethymno city, in the area of the archaeological site of Eleftherna.

The name of the village could derive from the Byzantine word “magarikon”, which was used for pottery items, such as jars, cups, plates. Potters are believed to have been called "magariki" and as they are said to be the first people to settle in the area, the village was named after them.

Margarites today still preserve a strong pottery tradition. Many habitants of the village are potters and some of them even make items imitating the prehistoric Minoan ceramic art.
